Jermain Defoe scores yet another vital goal for Sunderland and the veteran goal scorer is threatening to turn the relegation battle on its head once more. Whilst the other teams have been so short of quality in the final third, Defoe’s finishing has made him an icon of the Premier League for the best part of the last decade.
From relegation battles to title deciders, players who can be relied on to provide a cool finish in the most pressurised circumstances are invaluable. Defoe is symbolic of a poaching centre-forward, ruthless, dead-eyed and unwavering in his finishing.
The Premier League has many great goal scorers – its been the home of some of the all-time greats – but few are quite as reliable in front of the goal as Defoe.
So who are the best FIVE finishers in the league right now? We’ve picked FIVE and we are sure you won’t agree, so let us know!
Daniel Sturridge
Sturridge’s finishing has never been in doubt. Even when he was in and out of the Chelsea side a few years back, everyone was fully aware of just how lethal the ex-Manchester City man was in front of goal.
His left-foot is as dangerous as any in the game (ignore that Messi fella) and he will try the extraordinary when others would simply role it sideways.
Harry Kane
Kane is competing for the golden boot once again and Spurs’ talisman has been a star for the entire campaign.
Having to lead the line alone for much of the season, Kane has not had the other squad members there if he needed a rest and been superb throughout.
Could England have a better man to lead the attack for them this summer? A cool finisher who seldom seems to miss the target.
Alexis Sanchez
Unlike the others, Alexis Sanchez is not a centre forward by trade. Sanchez plays at his best as a left-winger with the freedom to roam centrally.
The Chilean is far more reliable in front of goal than any other player in Arsene Wenger’s squad and his recent form has been an exceptional demonstration of that.
Marko Arnautovic
Unquestionably Stoke’s player of the season, Arnautovic has developed into a clinical finisher and is the Potters’ top scorer in the Premier League.
His pace and power make him a force of nature when charging down the inside-left channel and, aside from the odd poor decision in the final third, Arnautovic has been a cool customer in the final third.
Sergio Aguero
Leave the best till last!
One of the very best players in world football and a man you would put your life on to score a clear-cut chance.
On course to win the golden boot, despite being injured for parts of the season, Aguero is a member of the footballing elite and Manchester City would be far worse off if it wasn’t for his magical right foot.
